Interview with Emil Bäcklund

Time flies when you are having fun. Our most recently hired colleague, Emil, has already been with us for 6 months. We have now got the opportunity to ask him a bunch of interesting questions. Read and enjoy!

Hi Emil! Was there anything in particular that attracted you to apply to Uppdragshuset?

Hi! Well, I was particularly attracted to Uppdragshuset due to its reputation for excellence in IP services and your commitment to leveraging advanced technology for patent analysis. The company’s focus on providing high-quality patent information services as well as the soft values, all aligned perfectly with my interests and beliefs.

You have now worked with us for around 6 months. What skills or perspectives did you bring from your patent attorney background that will benefit the analytical processes at Uppdragshuset?

From my background as a patent attorney, I bring an understanding of patent law and the details of patent prosecution and litigation. This experience may allow me to approach patent analysis with an eye for legal nuances and strategic considerations. I mean, as a patent attorney I was on the receiving end of the same information that I bring my clients today, so I have a pretty good feeling of what they want and what they need.

What is the most fun/interesting part about working here?

Definitely the variety of projects and different technical fields on cutting-edge technologies. Each case presents unique challenges and learning opportunities, keeping the work intellectually stimulating. Additionally, collaborating with a team of highly skilled professionals who share a passion for innovation and search strategics.

What do you think is the biggest difference working here from the job as a patent attorney?

The biggest difference is the shift from a more legal focus to a more analytical and search-oriented role. As a patent attorney, work revolved around legal strategy and the client interests and needs. In contrast, my role at Uppdragshuset is centered on in-depth patent search and analysis, requiring a different set of skills and a different mind-set.

How does a normal working day as a Patent Information Specialist look like for you?

A typical day involves patent searches and report preparation. I start by reviewing the day’s tasks and prioritizing projects based on deadlines and client needs. I’m a big fan of discussing details e.g., strategies or reviewing findings to ensure accuracy. So, when possible I like to do so with my colleagues. With that said, collaboration with colleagues is also a key part of my day.

What steps do you take to continuously improve your analytical skills and knowledge?

I continuously improve my skills simply by working with more searches, and as I said before discussing with people in the business can bring a lot of knowledge and insights.

It talks a lot about AI, how do you think that will impact your daily work life and what will the future look like?

Haha.. yeah, everybody is talking about AI right now. Personally, I’m not afraid of AI, the contrary. I think that AI has the potential to significantly enhance our efficiency and accuracy in patent analysis. It can assist in automating routine tasks (witch honestly can be quite boring), allowing us to focus on more complex and value-added activities. In the future, I expect AI tools becoming integral to our workflows, enabling us to handle larger volumes of data more effectively and providing deeper insights through advanced analytics.

Well, being a Patent Information Specialist takes a lot of time… But when you are outside the office, what do you like to do?

Outside the office, I enjoy activities that allow me to recharge and let go of the day. I love spending time with my kids, preferably outdoors. That gives me the contrast that I need to unwind and recharge. Additionally, spending time running is important to me, after a day at the office (or during my lunch break) I usually jump into my Adidas and just stop thinking for a while.

We thank Emil for his interesting answers to our questions, his continuous curiosity to patent analytics and the great mood he brings to the team.
