Julia Hammes to Speak at FORUM Institut’s Course on Freedom to Operate

We are pleased to announce that our colleague Julia Hammes will be one of the featured speakers at the upcoming course “Freedom to Operate – Search and Analysis,” organized by FORUM Institut.

This course provides a comprehensive and practice-oriented overview of the freedom to operate (FTO) process, with a unique focus on how professionals from different roles collaborate to ensure a thorough and reliable assessment. It brings together insights from three core perspectives:

  • In-house patent counsel
  • Patent attorney
  • Search specialist

FTO analyses are most effective when these roles work in concert. The search specialist is responsible for identifying relevant prior rights and providing clear, well-structured search results. The in-house counsel brings an understanding of the business context, helping to prioritize risks and align the analysis with corporate strategy. The patent attorney interprets the legal implications of the findings and advises on risk mitigation, clearance, or design-around strategies.

By working together, these professionals ensure that the FTO process is not only technically sound but also aligned with both legal requirements and business objectives. This course highlights how effective communication and clearly defined roles are key to a successful collaboration – transforming a complex process into a strategic asset.

Participants will benefit from real-world examples, best practices, and practical guidance designed to enhance cooperation across disciplines. Whether you are in IP, R&D, or legal, this course will provide valuable tools for making informed decisions in innovation-driven environments.
